The most recent edition of a fest rapidly ascending to prominence, Monster Energy’s 2016 Carolina Rebellion shattered a host of records, attendance and otherwise. Over 90,000 attended the festival which ran from May 6-8th. The fruits of the festival’s persistent labor were particularly apparent with over 60 bands in attendance including Rob Zombie, Scorpions, Disturbed, and countless others throughout Concord, NC’s Rock City Campground’s four stages. These performances were paired over 12 hours of performances and interviews.
The crown jewel of the festival took the form of metal icons Scorpions kicking off their 50th anniversary global tour with an unbelievably energetic set. Motorhead’s Mikkey Dee drumming for the outfit was only the first of multiple star-studded performances including Rob Zombie, Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, Shinedown, Deftones, A Day To Remember, 3 Doors Down, Bring Me The Horizon, Cypress Hill, Pennywise, Lamb Of God, plus Rock & Roll Hall Of Famers Lynyrd Skynyrd and Alice Cooper, thrash pioneers Megadeth and Anthrax, and many more.
Significant acclaim was compounded onto this record breaking weekend, with the Charlotte Observer saying “Expanding from two to three days for the first time in its six year history allowed for a more eclectic lineup…Throughout the weekend there was a defiant spirit that Carolina Rebellion and its sister festivals prove that rock – while it’s not the sole chart-ruler it once was – is by no means dead…I was reminded of the camaraderie and community that these kinds of events create. In a global climate where so much emphasis is on division, the kind of unity music creates is greatly needed.”
