For a collective that is eager to embrace the past so long as they can put a modern spin on things, the fact that a diverse and multi-talented group such as The Eagle Rock Gospel formed in a city like Los Angeles is no surprise. The group formed in 2010 and quickly began finding their sound, solidifying their lineup, and playing house parties and shows throughout the LA area. The group’s formation and sustenance can be treated as a testament to courage that cuts both ways. A chaotic 2010 plane ride served as a catalyst for the group’s formation and the band’s unwavering commitment to their sound and message in a city widely publicized (in both a journalistic and creative sense) for drug use, a multitude of facades, and areas such as Skid Row deserves praise all its own.
These efforts culminated in the 2015 release of their debut album Heavenly Fire via Ba Da Bing Records (Sharon Van Etten, Beirut). The record quickly became the subject of widespread critical and public acclaim. Eager to capitalize on this acclaim furthermore, the band is keen to release a music video for the eponymous single “Heavenly Fire”, featuring collaborations with prominent figures such as Matt Wignall. Shot on location in Joshua Tree, Wignall also directed the music video, which can be viewed below. Recording studio or desert rock aficionados may even be able to recognize the sights and sounds of the creative bastion that is Joshua Tree, California.
The group has also announced a set of tour dates throughout North America, which are listed below. More pointed praise has come from the publication LA Weekly, with them lauding the group for their “ rip-roaring, soaring batch of rootsy-flavored originals written by the band’s individual members, who took their songwriting cues from the greatest and most venerable of American trad musical genres.” The band’s debut record can be purchased either electronically or physically here.
