The Nightowls Premiere New Single “Clean It Up (Play By The Rules)” New EP Out In July

It’s a plethora of good tidings and releases for austed-based motown soul band The Nightowls. The group has teamed up with Baeble Music to release their latest single, “Clean It Up (Play By The Rules).” The band has also announced a set of North American tour dates as well as a brand new EP Royal Sessions, due out July 15. Tickets for The Nightowls’ upcoming tour can be purchased here and listen to the group’s new single via Baeble music here

The Nightowls’ effervescent blend of contemporary pop and prototypical period-era soul found the perfect home in Memphis’ highly prominent Royal Studios, which has formerly played host to genre titans such as Al Green, John Mayer, and Rod Stewart. With Royal Sessions, The Nightowls are keen to display a heightened sense of ambition, simultaneously showcasing their reverence and influence from James Brown and Michael Jackson whilst attempting to ditch their sound’s “retro” reputation in lieu of an increasingly nuanced and contemporary sound.

Throughout the release, unadulterated vocals effortlessly mix with soulful rhythms and bombastic brass resulting in an infectious and layered record. Ryan Harkrider (lead vocals), Amos Traystman (guitar), Rob Alton (bass), Ben Petree (drums), Oscar Interiano (keyboard), Michael Rey (horns), Andrew McElmore (horns), Javier Stuppard (horns), Ellie Harkrider (background vocals) and Tara Williamson (background vocals) make up The Nightowls.

The group first stormed the Austin scene in 2014 with the release of their debut LP, Good As Gold. Immediate praise came at the hands of The Austin Chronicle, with the publication calling the record “suave, energic, blue-eyed soul” and named the album one of their Top 10 of the year at the annual Austin Chronicle Music Awards. Additional laudation has come via Austin Monthly and Texas Music Magazine, calling the group a Band to Watch and referring to the record as “a smooth, addictive blend of pop, R&B, and funk that will delight the band’s dance-happy fans” respectively.

An increasingly impressive collection of live shows capped off this praise, highlighted by a memorable performance at Austin City Limits Festival. 2015 saw The Nightowls play a set at the seminal Muscle Shoals studio as a part of “Fame Sessions.” Immense praise for the group came from a number of national and well-received publications such as The Atlantic, Southern Living, Relix, and Pollstar. In the wake of this immense praise, The Nightowls will be sure to both grow and expand on their sheerly enthusiastic and iconoclastic sound with a handful of live shows, with a list of confirmed dates provided below.
