Late Monday night I sat down in a hotel room in Fishkill, NY to talk to Out of Ashes about their future plans and the beginning of their journey as a band. Along the way, I learned all sorts of things about what they do outside of their music.
Before we start, can you each tell me your name, role in the band, and a funny fact about yourself?
Rob: My name is Rob I am the Vocalist and I am a ginormous WWE wrestling fan.
Brad: I’m Brad, I play Guitar. I’ve pretty much had a mohawk since I could walk. Sam: Hey I’m Sam. I play Bass. I’m addicted to Wawa. Seriously…
Alex: I play Drums. I can do all kinds of crazy hand gestures and movements (Mind out of the gutter guys!)
Since Out of Ashes is a new band to the scene, can you tell me how and when you started up?
Brad: We all got together in January. Rob, Don, and Alex started playing together for a while and then they found Sam and I on Craigslist. Everything just really clicked. And here we are!
What makes this band different than previous bands or projects you were involved in?
Brad: We all have such varying influences and came from such different bands that we work in a very unorthodox way. Also, experience from those bands has helped along the way.
Where did the name “Out of Ashes” come from?
Rob: We all came together and rose out of the ashes of our previous bands. I think you get the idea.
Since you’re currently recording your first single at Nada Recording Studio, do you have any future plans or shows that we should keep our eyes peeled for?
Rob: We are looking to release our first single “Small Town Hero” on June 15th! We couldn’t be more excited to release music and are super excited to record with John Naclerio at Nada! We have a couple of shows coming up one of which hasn’t been announced officially yet and the other is June 14th at Great Horse in Millstone! We’re looking to finish our EP titled “Above All Else” in August and release it this fall! Look for it then!
Do you have any musical influences as a band? If not, who are your individual influences? Rob: We’re pretty much all over the place when it comes to influences but we can all mostly agree on a few bands such as Linkin Park, Blink-182, and A Day to Remember. My biggest influences personally are Linkin Park, Chester Bennington, Sevendust, Avenged Sevenfold, Papa Roach, Chris Cornell, and We Came as Romans.
Brad: Guitar playing-wise: Zakk Wylde, John 5, Yngwie Malmsteen, Andy McKee, Dimebag Darrell, Eddie Van Halen, Synyster Gates, Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, and Brian Sawyer. Song Writing-wise: Mudvayne, Slipknot, All That Remains, Tool, Chevelle, Straight Line Stitch, Alice in Chains, and I am Abomination.
Sam: The Acacia Strain, Modern Baseball, Vanna, The Devil Wears Prada, and Enter Shikari mostly influence me.
Alex: Travis Barker is my main influence. Blink-182, New Found Glory, Simple Plan, Yellowcard, and Fall Out Boy.
In your opinion, what’s the most important part about playing music?
Rob: Enjoying what you do, putting everything into your music, and being humble if you succeed.
Brad: To me music is a like a drug. I crave it more and more every day. The rush I get on stage is like an addiction that I never want to end and when it does I want more. I try to challenge myself by writing harder and more intricate stuff for myself to play. There’s nothing better then hearing a new song that you fall in love with right away, so that inspires me to put everything I possibly have into my guitar playing and song writing. To me there’s nothing in the world better then seeing someone enjoy the music I make and that’s the main reason I do it.
Alex: To me, playing music is a great way to express yourself. The way you feel can be easily expressed through your playing and writing, and this makes for both the music you play and write to be uniquely your own and capturing your feelings and personality within the sound.
Sam: Feeling that feel when you play is like being on an iceberg in the middle of winter. Truth.
What would be your dream tour if you could pick any band at all (even straying away from your genre)?
Rob: Linkin Park, hands down.
Alex: Blink-182. And in between shows Travis and I can enter into crazy drum battles and teach me his sick ways 🙂
Brad: I know we wouldn’t fit, but Slipknot, Black Label Society, or A Day to Remember.
Sam: A headlining Enter Shikari tour with support from The Devil Wears Prada and Vanna.
What is your favorite food to order at a diner?
Rob: Disco Fries and Burgers. The Classic!
Alex: Pasta and seafood; Regardless of where I am, that is what I get.
Brad: Boneless buffalo wings and fries.
Sam: A burger with no fries.
If all five of your members were stuck on an island who would be the last one standing?
Rob: Definitely Alex.
Alex: Not to brag, but I would have to say me.
Sam: Me! *flips hair*
Brad: I plead the fifth.
Who would be cut out first?
Rob: Sam. Sorry.
Alex: Sam. Yeah…
Brad: I plead the fifth… again.
Sam: All of you together 😦
Aww poor Sam! What would your ring name be if you were a wrestler?
Rob: I would totally be The Corrector! I’d be a douchebag heel kinda like a mix between Damien Sandow and Bad News Barrett. I have a bad habit of correcting people all the time.
Brad: The Big Island
Sam: Cyclone (the son of Hurricane)
Alex: Stretch. Inc.
When you aren’t writing and practicing your music, what other things are you interested in? Pizza…
Rob: I’m obsessed with WWE and go to a lot of live events when I can. I like video games a lot too!
Alex: Cooking, video games, board games, and TV.
Brad: I enjoy comedy a lot. Watching any kind of stand up or a funny movie and listening/telling people jokes and just making people laugh in general.
Sam: Playing Super Mario Sunshine on my GameCube because I like to feel like I am six again.
Are there any other things you would like to share?
Brad: I love lamp.
